Short summary

I'm a CNRS senior research scientist at the Marine Optics and Remote Sensing group of the Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche in France. I received a doctorate degree in oceanography from the Université Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris, France, in 1995. My research interests include marine optics, bio-optics, radiative transfer and applications, ocean colour remote sensing including atmospheric corrections, modelling of oceanic primary production from satellite ocean colour. I was involved in the definition, preparation and implementation of the European Space Agency (ESA) ENVISAT-MERIS ocean colour satellite mission. I have served as chair (2007-2009) of the ocean group of the French space agency (CNES) scientific committee. I now serve as chair of the International Ocean-Colour Coordinating Group, and I'm a member of the ESA’ Earth Science Advisory Committee.

Responsibilities in programs / projects (chronological order) :

1)            Development of MERIS algorithms: from 1995 to 2003, I had a leadership role in the development of atmospheric corrections algorithms for the ESA MERIS ocean colour satellite mission.  This was done in the frame of the “Expert Support Laboratories”, including my lab, the Plymouth Marine Lab (UK), the free Univ. of Berlin, the GKSS in Hamburg, the Joint Research Center in Ispra (Italy), the LISE in Wimereux (France), all being coordinated by ACRI-st.

2)            Coordination of two research proposals submitted to the EC: in 1997, « M6P » proposal concerning global primary production from MERIS observations (6 European partners). In October 2001: « ESOC » proposal concerning BOUSSOLE and other time series projects in Europe (7 partners). These projects were not selected.

3)            Collaboration with Univ. Miami: (decadal changes in global ocean colour). This work requested a permanent effort of coordination, insofar as we had each one on our side other projects and various responsibilities. The success of this project also led to a new project (GLOBPHY), funded by the French “Agence Nationale de la Recherche”.

4)            Proposal coordination for a future space mission, BIOGEOSAT: this proposal was made in 2002 to ESA (in response to the “Earth Explorer” ITT) with the support of CNES, with the objective of installing a constellation of ocean colour micro satellites, combined with an instrument in geostationary position. The consortium that I had set up included 7 research partners in Europe/ Canada, and 4 industry partners in Europe

5)            BOUSSOLE: I entirely set up the BOUSSOLE project, which resulted in the drafting of very many proposals (space agencies, national bodies, Europe 5th PCRDT…), by the need for coordinating a multitude of “day-to-day” actions in order to be able to maintain within reasonable times the development of the project.

6)            I was chairman of a working group elected by the IOCCG on “Ocean-Colour Data Binning Issues”. The final report was published in 2004 by IOCCG (N°4, http://www.ioccg.org ).

7)            I coordinate a “Research and technology” action funded by CNES, the goal of which being to develop a radiance camera for the measurement of the underwater radiance distribution.

8)            GlobCOLOUR Project: I bring my expertise in ocean colour remote sensing to the GlobCOLOUR project financed by the ESA (2006-2008).

9)            Coordination of the GLOBPHY project, financed by the French ANR (2007-2009): project joining together 3 French labs, around the topic: “Analysis of decadal exchanges in the total ocean phytoplankton through the synergistic uses of satellite data and 1-D and 3-D models”.
