Research interests:

My broad research interest is the dissection of the relevant processes, which affect the variability of phytoplankton biomass and its composition, combining the synoptic quasi-continuous satellite information and the in-situ and model-derived data, to be able to predict long-term trends in primary productivity in relation to climate variability.
More specifically I would like:

  • to identify within the most active biological sites of the global ocean, the ones which display the most significant interannual and long term variations, quantifying temporal and spatial scales of single events;
  • to discriminate among different color signatures of each bloom to possibly improve our knowledge on its biological signature;
  • to gain insight, coupling remote-sensing data, inverse methods and process oriented models, on what groups contribute the most to the primary production;
  • to reconstruct the sub-surface dynamics to better constrain the fate of primary production;
  • to predict possible changes in space, time and features of phytoplankton blooms in the global ocean;
  • to exploit new robotic plateforms, as the profilng buoys, gliders or bio-optical moorings, to ameliorate our comphension of the physical-biological coupling in the oceans.
